Individual Battles
Little Round Top
Little round top played a major role in the victory of the North. Every person in the military knows that ground troops have the advantage if they have a higher elevation. Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain knew this and he placed himself and his troops on little round top, countering many confederate attacks. No matter how hard they tried, the Confederate army couldn't take little hill top. This was one of the many advantages that the north had over the south. This strategy was used earlier in America's history at the Battle of Bunker hill in 1775.
Cemetery Hill / Devils Den
Cemetery Hill - was also a very major hill incorporated with the Unions strategy. Gen. Howard left his Infantry to control the hill in case of the Union being pushed back. It was later used as a rallying point for retreating soldiers.
Devils Den - The Union army had 2,400 men on their side and 5,500 on the Confederates side. The outcome was a confederate victory. Even though the Confederates won, more people died on their side, 1,800 and 800 died fighting for the Union.
