Background Information
General Meade, commander of the Potomac Army, Nickname was "Old Baldy"
The battle of Gettysburg was a long and hard fought battle, many died and few survived. The Battle lasted three days but by nightfall on the third night the Union troops came triumphed atop Lee's men. General Meade, the main Union general in the battle of Gettysburg, was considered to be not a very good general by many, since he did not follow Lee after his retreat, but at the battle, most say that Meade came out on top due to the terrain and weather at Gettysburg. Since the battle was fought on Union land in Pennsylvania, the Union troops were able to optimize their advantages with how well they knew the land and it's surroundings. Where they battled was a key factor in the win over the confederacy.
"During the heavy assault upon our extreme left, portions of the Twelfth Corps were sent as re-enforcements. During their absence, the line on the extreme right was held by a very much reduced force. This was taken advantage of by the enemy, who, during the absence of Geary's division of the Twelfth Corps, advanced and occupied a part of his line."
