Before the Battle
Leading up to the great battle of Gettysburg General Robert E. Lee had been on a winning streak. The battle of Chancellorsville was a great battle and for Lee and his troops was the confidence builder. After the battle of Chancellorsville Lee knew that the only way the Confederate army could win was if they started to win battles in the Northern Territory and that would shift the momentum so Lee started to push the Northern troops into their territory and win but he was stopped at Gettysburg.
Aftermath

After the battle, on July 4th, Lee retreated with his wounded men to the Potomac River but was confronted with another battle. Later Lee asked Jefferson Davis if he could resign but Davis said no.
After the battle, even though the union won, they were left very wounded and they lost a lot of supplies mostly ammunition. When Mead didn't follow Lee after he retreated he was made fun of but he still remained commander.
After the battle not only were both armies were affected but the civilians at Gettysburg were left with damaged homes and were they live. They also were left with thousands of dead bodies. There was also one civilian killed and since there were so many dead bodies the living grounds were infected with diseases.
This battle ended very negatively for both sides, but mostly for the Confederates. Over Half of Lee's officers were killed, captured, or missing. This made it difficult to command so many troops. This is one of the reasons that Lee's invasion ended after Gettysburg, where so many of his Officers were killed or captured.
